As a convertible owner, you’ll want to make sure that you keep the car in good shape. Here’s how you can do that.

Do the Basics Right

Firstly, you need to make sure your convertible is in good condition. If it’s old and past it’s best, consider getting an upgrade from Imperial Car Supermarket.

Then, remember that just because you have a convertible, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do the ordinary things with your car. This is a mistake that a lot of people make when they start driving a convertible car for the first time. So, don’t let yourself fall into this trap. What are the basic things that every driver should remember? You should firstly check your tyre pressure once a month to make sure they’re filled. If they’re not, top them up to stay safe.

Check your driver’s manual if you’re not sure what the correct level of tyre pressure is for your particular car. You should also remember to check and change all the different kinds of oil your car needs to function. Engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant will need to be changed roughly every 6 months. You’ll need to replace the power steering fluid every 3 years too. Finally, don’t forget about your air filters – they’ll need to be changed after every 15,000 miles you drive.

Park it Somewhere Suitable

Every car should be parked as safely as possible, but it’s even more important when you drive a car with a convertible roof. If something falls on it, it could tear the roof. And anyone who has experienced that will be able to tell you that it’s not cheap to get a torn roof fixed. One thing you should never do it park under a tree; it’s much safer to park in the open air so to avoid falling branches.

If at all possible, you should park it under cover. Parking it in a garage is best. So, if you’ve got one, clear it out to make space for your car. If you don’t have a garage, think about renting one nearby to keep your car as safe as possible. Or you could buy a cheap cover to put over the car when you’re not driving it. This will protect you from bird mess, and that’s important. It’s very acidic so it’ll corrode the roof material.

Take Special Care of the Roof

When you have a soft top convertible, you need to look after the roof very carefully. Because it is made from fabric, it can get damaged very easily if you’re not being careful with it. Like I discussed above, the first thing to do is make sure you’re parking it somewhere safe. You should also wash the roof carefully at least twice a year. You need to use a specific type of cleaner to make sure you get the best results.

To make sure that the cleaning product doesn’t leave residue on the roof of the car, you should make sure that you use a cleaner that’s biodegradable. You should also stay away from bleaching agents, as these will stain the roof of your car. They can also cause threads to loosen because they’ll corrode the protective oil that covers most convertible roofs. There are plenty of specific brands that are made for use on convertibles, so use them.
